Privacy Policy

The short version: CodeBeasts has no ads, no analytics, and no tracking, and we run no server of our own. Everything the game creates, your beasts and your progress, stays on your device. If you use the Kinetic Link, the game reads your daily step count to turn it into EXP, on your phone, and it goes no further. The one exception is optional: if you want, you can back your game up with Google Play Games so you can restore it on a new phone. That backup lives in your own Google account, not with us, and it only happens if you turn it on.

Who this covers

This policy applies to the CodeBeasts mobile app for Android (package sh.albe.codebeasts) and this website, codebeasts.net.

Information we collect

None, on our side. CodeBeasts has no backend server of our own, no ads, and no analytics. We do not collect your name, email, location, contacts, advertising ID, or any usage data. The game does not require an account to play.

The only time any data leaves your device is the optional cloud backup described below, and even then it goes to your own Google account, not to us. We never receive or store it.

How the permissions are used

The app asks for a small number of device permissions, and only for gameplay:

  • Camera Used only to read barcodes so the game can turn them into beasts. Barcode scanning happens entirely on your device. Camera images are not saved, and are never uploaded or sent anywhere.
  • Step count (Health Connect) Only asked for if you use the Kinetic Link, and only ever to read your daily step total so the game can turn it into EXP for one beast you pick. CodeBeasts reads daily totals, never individual records, and it never writes anything back to Health Connect. This is the only health permission the app asks for. See the section below.
  • Network access Comes with Google Play Games, which powers the optional cloud backup. The game uses it to talk to Google when you sign in and when your save is backed up or restored. If you never turn cloud backup on, CodeBeasts sends nothing over the network. We have no server for it to reach in the first place.
  • Bluetooth & Wi-Fi (Nearby) Used only when you choose to trade or battle with a friend who is in the same room. This creates a direct, offline connection between the two phones. The beasts you trade or battle with travel straight between your devices. Nothing passes through us, and we keep no copy of it.

On Android 12 and newer, the Bluetooth scan permission is declared “never for location”, so the game does not request or use your location. On older Android versions the system may still require a location permission for Bluetooth scanning; even then, CodeBeasts does not read, store, or share your location.

Step count and the Kinetic Link

The Kinetic Link is an optional feature that turns walking into EXP. You pick one beast, link it, and the steps you walk become experience points for it. It is off until you turn it on, and the rest of the game plays normally without it.

  • What we read Your daily step total, through Android's Health Connect, and nothing else. We do not read heart rate, sleep, workouts, weight, or any other health or fitness data, and the app cannot ask for them. We never write data into Health Connect either.
  • Where it goes Nowhere. Your steps are read on your phone, converted into an EXP number there, and that is the end of it. We have no server, so there is nothing for them to be sent to. The app does not keep a history of your walking.
  • Turning it off Unlink the beast in the app at any time, or revoke the permission in Health Connect in your Android settings. Either one stops the game reading your steps. Your beast keeps the EXP it already earned.
  • The one thing that is stored So the game does not pay you twice for the same walk, it keeps a running total of steps counted through the link, plus today's total and how much EXP it has already awarded. If you turn on cloud save, those numbers travel with the rest of your save (see below), because otherwise restoring a backup would hand out a duplicate day of EXP.

Cloud save with Google Play Games

CodeBeasts offers an optional cloud backup so you do not lose your collection if you switch or reset your phone. It is off until you choose to use it. Nothing is backed up unless you sign in and tap Back up.

  • Signing in To back up or restore, you sign in with Google Play Games using your own Google account. Google shares a Play Games player id with the game so it can find your backup. You can play the entire game without ever signing in.
  • What gets backed up A single save file holding your game progress: your caught beasts, battle record, achievements, and your trainer profile, including any trainer name you typed in. If you use the Kinetic Link, it also holds the step totals described above, for the anti-double-counting reason given there. It contains no contacts, no location, and no camera images.
  • Where it is stored In your own Google Play Games saved-games storage, which is part of your Google account. It travels between your device and Google. It never passes through us, and we keep no copy of it. Google's handling of that data is covered by Google's Privacy Policy.

Where your game data lives

By default, your collection, champion, and battle record are saved only on your device. Uninstalling the app removes that local data. If you turn on cloud save, a copy also lives in your own Google Play Games storage as described above, so you can restore it later.

Third parties

CodeBeasts uses Google's on-device barcode scanning (ML Kit). The barcode-recognition model may be downloaded by Google Play services when you install the app. We do not send your scans, photos, or personal data to Google or anyone else. If you turn on cloud save, the game also uses Google Play Games services to store and restore your backup, as described above. If you use the Kinetic Link, the game reads your step total through Health Connect, which is part of your Android system and already holds that data. The game contains no third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.

Children's privacy

CodeBeasts is intended for a general audience, including children. We do not run ads, analytics, tracking SDKs, or a server of our own, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children on our own systems. The app can store game progress on the device, and optional cloud save can back that progress up to the player's own Google Play Games storage as described above.

A parent, guardian, or player can contact us at [email protected] with privacy questions or to ask for help deleting CodeBeasts data.

Changes to this policy

If the app changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and the “last updated” date above.
